The shelter population is growing as cooling temperatures begin to arrive in the Carolinas. Sadly, the Holiday season optimizes the polarity of wealth and poverty. As “blessed children” return to school with discussion of their Holiday festivities, my (yes MY) children can not share without a tinge of embarrassment that their home is not one on a hill, but is a shelter. Their Thanksgiving meal is received in a soup kitchen line. Each child is one-amongst many. Although turkey and dressing will fill their stomachs, there is also an absence of generational family joy. Here there is not beauty from a table filled with decorations and festive bounty. With our nation’s focus on materialism, Christmas objectifies these little ones even more. There is no family tree, there are no twinkling lights and there is little discussion of Santa coming down a chimney. Here the children are fighting battles against bedbugs, lack of adequate warm clothing, and discrimination. American commercialism paints Thanksgiving and Christmas filled with illusions of Holiday dreams that are impossible for my children to attain. Will you please remember them at your Holiday tables? As you thank God for your many blessings, please pray that my little ones can capture the “Truth” somewhere hidden amongst all of this.

I praise God for ONE lady who stood up among many to acknowledge her need for Jesus as Savior and Master. As many sat behind her, she took her stand for Jesus, a bit afraid, a bit timid…but none the less, a true heart surrendered to God! Please keep this sweet one in your prayers as she begins her new life.
